  5. We've probably all dreamed of  getting  our own voices on to
  6. disk, or even our own  sounds.  Things like a window opening
  7. causing "Hallelujah" samples to play or  when you pick up an
  8. icon to move it, it screams "Put  me down! Put me down I can
  9. walk on my own" in the tone of Norman Bates' mother from the
  10. classic, Psycho! Even  using  your  own  sounds  in trackers
  11. would be good. But it's  all  too  dear  - £100 and £150 for
  12. good sampler programs. Never mind.....
  13.  
  14. Well! All that's  changed  because  Stereo  Master  is here.
  15. Costing only £39.95  you  get  everything  you  need  to get
  16. going, apart from the sound  source.  Stereo Master comes in
  17. two parts; the hardware and the  software. We'll take a look
  18. at each one in turn.
  19.  
  20. Software
  21. --------
  22. The Stereo Master software works on any ST but if you own an
  23. STE takes full advantage of DMA and stereo sound. Of course,
  24. the more memory you have, the larger the samples can be. But
  25. then if you have 4Mb  and  a  sample  which takes up all the
  26. memory, you can't save it  to  floppy  disk because a floppy
  27. can only hold 720k. However, there is a shrinking mode which
  28. shrinks the sample down as  much  as possible and allows you
  29. to save it; then  when  you  load  the  sample in again, you
  30. enlarge it. There is no  loss  of  quality, volume etc. when
  31. doing this and it is a very good option.
  32.  
  33. The software  is  very  well  presented,  although  not  GEM
  34. compatible, and has lots of  features;  one  of which is the
  35. real-time effects which can  be  added  to incoming samples.
  36. Let's take a look at the software specifications.
  37.  
  38. SAMPLING: Record,  Auto  Record  Trigger,  Play  and Monitor
  39. input. Real time digital sound effects.
  40.  
  41. MEMORY: Utilises full RAM of any ST range up to 4Mb.
  42.  
  43. ANALYSIS:  Dual  Digital  oscilloscopes,   3D  Fast  Fourier
  44. Transform display and Real Time Spectrum Analyser.
  45.  
  46. FREQUENCY: Play frequencies from 3.0 to 28KHz in "STFM" mode
  47. and 6, 12 and 25KHz in "STE" mode.
  48.  
  49. EDITING: Cut, copy,  insert,  paste,  delete,  overlay, swap
  50. channels,  copy  between  channels,   fade  in/out,  filter,
  51. shrink, volume up/down, stereo bounce, reverse.
  52.  
  53. FILE: Load and save samples in RAW and AVR sample formats.
  54.  
  55. MIDI: Up to 10 samples can  be  assigned and split accross a
  56. MIDI keyboard.
  57.  
  58. These specifications show that you get  quite a lot for your
  59. money with Stereo Master.
  60.  
  61. When you first  load  it  up,  you  are  presented  with two
  62. windows at the top of the  screen which contain the samples,
  63. and two windows either side of the screen with oscilliscopes
  64. that measure the volume of the incoming/playing sample. They
  65. are provided to allow you  to  set  the  volume to the right
  66. amount on your sound source. If they are too high, the sound
  67. source is too loud and if they are too low, the sound source
  68. is too soft. If you  don't  set the volume correctly, you'll
  69. get poor quality samples.

  71. There are  also  standard  tape  player  controls.  Pressing
  72. record, records the sample. Pressing play, plays the sample.
  73. Stop, well you know....  The  only  one  you don't associate
  74. with a tape player  is  the  "monitor" function. Clicking on
  75. this  lets  you  hear  the  incoming  sound  source  without
  76. actually recording it. This  is  useful  for  getting to the
  77. right place on a CD or tape. You can also switch into stereo
  78. mode by clicking on the speaker icons, providing you have an
  79. STE, and you can use the  STE's DMA sound hardware. Changing
  80. to STE  mode  means  you  can  record  in  6,  12  and 25KHz
  81. frequencies  which  all   give   better   quality  than  the
  82. alternatives in the "STFM" mode. If  you use an STE, use DMA
  83. sound. It's a lot better, believe me.

  85. The normal functions  are  all  there;  cut  and paste, fade
  86. in/out and volume  increase/decrease.  The  best thing about
  87. Stereo Master is its ability to  add effects in real-time to
  88. incoming sounds. You just  click  on  add effect, choose the
  89. effect you want, click  on  record  and  you hear the effect
  90. being added in real-time.  Here  are  the effects available,
  91. they're brilliant:

  93. ECHO: This is a single  echo  that repeats only once, rather
  94. like a parrot. You may  set  the  length with the control to
  95. alter the delay speed and length simultaneously.
  96.  
  97. REVERB: This adds depth  to  sound,  rather  like being in a
  98. cathedral, without actually  echoing.  You  may  control the
  99. reverb delay and length with the controls.
  100.  
  101. MULTI ECHO: Multi Echo is  a  repeated echo effect that will
  102. give any  sound  a  new  dramatic  gravity!  This  effect is
  103. equally suited to speech  as  well  as  music. The lunchtime
  104. news becomes a thundering  sermon!  Use  the delay slider to
  105. set how fast the sound  echoes,  and  the  length to set how
  106. long each echo lasts.

  108. PITCH UP: This will increase  the  frequency of sounds. This
  109. effect is very good with speech  - you can make people sound
  110. like helium breathers.
  111.  
  112. PITCH DOWN: Use this effect on  speech to turn yourself into
  113. a baritone - even if you're a female!
  114.  
  115. CHORUS: Chorus blends  pitch  up,  a  pitch  down and normal
  116. sound to create a harmony effect.
  117.  
  118. PHASER: Phaser mixes a sound with itself to create a subtle,
  119. whoosing timbre especially  with  trebbly  sounds and music.
  120. The delay control sets the  speed  of the phasing, while the
  121. length control sets the duration for each phase.
  122.  
  123. REVERSE: Reverses the sound in real-time!
  124.  
  125. RAMP: Ramp changes the volume of the sound rapidly to create
  126. a sort of tremelo effect.  This is especially effective when
  127. a fast rate is used with guitar controls.
  128.  
  129. PITCH BEND: This very  versatile  effect  lets you raise and
  130. lower the  pitch  of  sounds  with  time  to  create vibrato
  131. effects. Slow rates and small  shifts  can make speech sound
  132. rather inebriated. You can also use  this effect to create a
  133. Dalek sound - EXTERMINATE... EXTERMINATE...!

  137. The effects are  really  good,  and  show  just  what Stereo
  138. Master is capable of. The  only  real thing wrong, that I've
  139. found, with Stereo Master is  that sometimes it doesn't save
  140. samples. I've yet to come up with a remedy for this....

  142. The Hardware
  143. ------------
  144. Not much to say about this  really. The hardware is a little
  145. cartridge that plugs into the cartridge  port of your ST. It
  146. is quite small and has a little stereo jack socket where you
  147. connect either a microphone or  a  3.5mm  lead to a CD, tape
  148. recorder or other sound source.  Here are the specifications
  149. of the Stereo Master hardware.

  153. SAMPLING: Maximum frequency approximately 40KHz.

  155. SENSITIVITY: 2.5 volts (peak to peak)

  159. Well, there you have it. A  full description of a cheap, but
  160. excellent, sampling package.
